Are you grounded?
Written by Janelle Buchheit One of your greatest challenges as an empath will be staying grounded within yourself. Empaths use their ‘energetic feelers’ and feel the feelings of others. This can allow the empath to better understand and help others. Grounding into ourselves can feel like we are stepping away from our service to the world because we sometimes we help best by reading the energy of others. However, empaths cannot be ‘energetically at work’ for others 24/7 and expect to be free of burn-out, illness and resentment. Your self-care, fulfillment and enjoyment of this life is just as important as those you choose to help in this lifetime. When you take care of yourself you will be better able to serve others. When empaths are ungrounded, it can be hard to get focused or maintain focus. Our minds feel scattered and we become easily overwhelmed. We feel lost because we are disconnected from ourselves as our focus has consistently been on another rather than on ourselves. A lot of times we actually neglect our wants and needs to provide for someone else. Our emotions can feel out of control and new feelings can swoop in quickly and hit us hard. A lot of times, our ‘feelers’ are picking up on the emotional discord of those around us and we are left trying to understand why we feel this way. All of these reasons explain why it is so important for empaths to ground themselves. Here are some tips to help you ground yourself, clear your energetic field and connect into you: GROUNDING YOURSELF Ground yourself frequently—at least once a day and several times a day during challenging or emotionally charged times. SPEND TIME ALONE: (without your phone or with phone on airplane mode) If you spent a lot of time engaging with others, either in-person or online, it is a good idea to spend some time alone to be able to connect into and ‘feel’ yourself again. Spending time alone will help you to know ‘what energy is yours’ and ‘what energy is theirs.’ SELF-CARE: Whatever your self-care practice is, increase it. Empaths need a higher-level of self-care than others. Keep a list of your self-care practices and refer to it when you realize you are not grounded. Have a support system that will remind you of your list and will help you get back on track with focusing on you again. SAY: choose the statement that feels the most true or reachable to you -I know how to ground myself / I am becoming more and more grounded / I am grounded -I know how to center myself / am becoming more and more centered / I am centered -I know how to be more present / I am becoming more and more present / I am present CLEAR YOUR ENERGETIC FIELD: -Make it practice to clear your energetic field every day -Imagine a bright light flowing like a waterfall or shower over you and gently washing away the energy of others. -Take a shower and imagine the energy of others being cleared away, wash your face. -If you are out in public, sometimes the best one can do is simply washing their hands and even up your arms. Do so with the intention of clearing energy. -Another way to unload or clear energy is to cry. ASK UNIVERSE FOR ASSISTANCE IN CLEARING YOUR ENERGETIC FIELD: -I ask that you disconnect me from the energy of the collective. (Note: While we are all One and your ‘feelers’ do help you to understand the world and its current predicament, it is not healthy for an empath to be constantly immersed in the flowing feelings of the collective especially when they are feeling ungrounded and/or scattered.) -I ask that you remove any old, stagnant energy from my energetic field that no longer serves me. IMAGINE: -Roots dropping from your root chakra (base of spine) and growing down into the earth. GET OUTSIDE & TAP INTO NATURE: (without your phone or on airplane mode) -Put your bare feet on the grass on on the ground (of course, be careful to not step on anything) -Walk bare foot in the grass -Take a nature walk/hike -Get some vitamin D and feel the sun on your skin (10-15 minutes) -Sit outside and watch the birds, etc. -Care for your plants/garden -Touch a tree (imagine yourself rooted next to it) -Jump into the ocean, a pool or another body of water TAKE A BREAK FROM TECH: -Turn off your devices (phone, computer, television) -Take an intentional break away from devices, social, media and news -If possible, turn phone to airplane mode or do not disturb for chunks of time (I’ll often alert my family that I am doing so in case they are trying to get ahold of me) -Clean and clear an old device to use solely for a timer, clock, camera, meditation music -Get an alarm clock or use an old device so you don’t have to keep phone by your bedside CHECK AND MAINTAIN YOUR BOUNDARIES: -Are you doing something you don’t want to do out of guilt? “No” is a complete sentence. -Are you too much in the business of others? It is not your job to save other people or involve yourself in everyone’s dramas. -Limit exposure to violent or emotionally charged television, movies, news, videos, social media -Limit time spent with emotional vampires or people that drain you of your life-force energy -Limit time spent with challenging family and/or friends EAT and HYDRATE: -Eat regularly and make sure you haven’t missed any of your meals. When ungrounded, it’s more likely you will forget to eat and hydrate properly. -Eat healthy, grounding foods like fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts -Sip slow and savor a soothing cup of herbal tea. DO THINGS THAT ENCOURAGE FLOW AND GET YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND: -Exercise, yoga, walk, etc. -Chop, cook, bake -Play instrument, sing -Listen to music -Create art -Dance CLEAN UP and DE-CLUTTER YOUR PHYSICAL SPACE: -Clean, organize, wash dishes, fold laundry, etc. -Choose a small routine task that you can complete easily. This will help bring ground you back into the here and now and increase feelings of accomplishment. MAKE SPACE FOR SILENT TIME: -Meditate (remember to use an anchor like music or a guided meditation if you’re feeling scattered) -Practice deep breathing -Take quiet time away from it all to tap into you
